Cannabis comes with a wide range of effective compounds out of which some are even useful as medical treatment. CBD is one such cannabinoid or compound found in the cannabis plant, which researchers all around the world have been utilising for therapeutic purposes.

While THC (also a cannabinoid) is best-known as the most active constituent capable of creating a mind-altering “high” when a person smokes or cooks it, CBD, however, is not psychoactive. Though it may produce significant changes in the body, and it even shows significant medical benefits.

Marijuana farmers selectively breed their plants to contain high levels of THC. However, hemp farmers rarely modify the plant and that’s where CBD oil comes from.

CBD oil comes with an array of benefits
A research called “A Cross-Sectional Study of Cannabidiol Users” conducted in 2018 claims cannabidiol to be an aid for arthritis or joint pain, anxiety and depression, sleeping disorders, migraine, other headaches, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), nausea, allergies or asthma, epilepsy and other seizure disorders, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and even cancer. Here are some other benefits of CBD oil:

1. Pain relief and anti-inflammatory properties
CBD oil is a natural pain relief solution. The non-psychoactive compounds in marijuana like CBD have the potential to be the new alternative for curing chronic pain.

CBD oil is said to reduce inflammation by preventing the release of compounds that trigger inflammation in the body at the first place. It can be applied on the skin to reduce inflammatory skin disease and scarring.

2. Helps quit smoking

Previously conducted studies have found that smokers who used CBD-infused inhalers smoked fewer cigarettes than usual and stopped craving nicotine. It is understood that the relaxing effect induced by CBD oil is what does the trick.

Not only that, CBD has been found effective with opioid addiction disorders as well. It reduces some symptoms associated with substance use disorders including anxiety, pain, and insomnia.

3. Epilepsy treatment
Approved by FDA in 2018, Epidiolex—drug for epilepsy treatment—is a purified form of CBD oil. It is useful in treating Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome, rare forms of epilepsy that involve seizures. These are difficult to control with other types of medication. There is no better synthetic alternative to it, that can treat the seizures without the sedating side effect.

4. Treatment for anxiety
THC can trigger or amplify feelings of anxiousness and paranoia and hence doctors ask people with chronic anxiety to avoid cannabis. However, CBD helps reduce anxiety. It reduces anxiety-related behaviour like in conditions such as PTSD, general anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

5. Reduces the risk of type-1 diabetes
When the immune system attacks cells in the pancreas and causes inflammation, that leads to type-1 diabetes. There is evidence that CBD oil may help ease this inflammation and provide protection against the onset of type 1 diabetes.

However, CBD oil comes with its own share of risks…
CBD oil may react with supplements and other drugs that you might be taking. And it is impossible to know if it is safe and effective for everyone to use, alike.

CBD oil could cause adverse effects like liver damage, compromise in the mind’s ability to focus, gastrointestinal problems and loss of appetite, mood swings, irritability and irritation.

Using CBD oil during pregnancy can affect the foetal development of neurons, and it is advised that you do not to use CBD during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

5 CBD Oil Benefits for Practical, Everyday Use

The list of potential CBD oil benefits is a long one. However, it’s essential to distinguish between research observations on CBD’s physiological action (most of which are observed on animal models) and actual clinical uses of CBD.

Epidiolex is the only FDA-approved drug that contains CBD. It is used to treat Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, Dravet syndrome, and tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC).

However, individuals may experience therapeutic benefits for various health-related issues when using a quality CBD product. This article looks at five practical, real-life benefits associated with CBD oil.

A Note on Legality & Medical Claims

Before we proceed, it is essential to point out that the CBD market is still loosely regulated in many areas. While Epidiolex is available by prescription, few (if any) other CBD products are regulated to strict manufacturing standards. Consequently, be wary of CBD sellers that make medical claims as to the efficacy of their product(s).

No brand should claim that its product cures, heals, or treats a medical condition.

This article focuses on potential CBD oil benefits based on available peer-reviewed studies and research. Remember – CBD affects everyone differently; thus, there are no guarantees of the efficacy of any one product for any one set of symptoms or health challenges.

1 – Reduction in Seizure Frequency & Intensity

The case of young Charlotte Figi (RIP) helped provide CBD with an international platform. In 2012, Charlotte’s parents began dosing oil extract from a unique high-CBD cannabis strain in a last-ditch effort to try and control their daughter’s relentless grand-mal seizure episodes. Astonishingly, the CBD oil resulted in a considerable reduction in both the frequency and the intensity of Charlotte’s seizures.

This, in part, helped to galvanize advanced research on the use of CBD for seizures, and now, the use of CBD oil for epileptic conditions is one of the most thoroughly-studied areas in terms of CBD-specific research.

In addition to the multi-stage clinical trials of Epidiolex, a 2019 study published in the peer-reviewed journal Molecules carried out clinical trials on the use of CBD for other epileptic conditions.

The study involved 171 patients, eighty-six of which received 20mg of CBD per kilogram of body weight per day for 14 weeks. The rest of the group received a placebo. Results from the trial showed that the CBD group experienced a reduction in seizures of almost 44% from baseline.

Thus, we can accurately say from a clinical standpoint that one of the key benefits of CBD oil is helping to reduce certain types of seizures and symptoms from some epileptic conditions.

2 – Potential Stress & Anxiety Alleviation

There is a variety of research relating to the use of CBD for stress and anxiety. In fact, in the National Institute of Health’s (NIH) PubChem database, CBD is listed (among other things) as having “anxiolytic activity” (anxiolytic refers to anxiety-reducing).

One of the most commonly cited studies regarding CBD use for anxiety was published in The Permanente Journal in January 2019. The study observed the prevalence of anxiety and sleep quality among 103 adults. In the first month of data collection, 79% of patients that used cannabidiol showed decreased anxiety scores. More importantly, the scores remained low for the entirety of the study.

While not yet FDA-approved as a form of treatment, anxiety and stress relief are major CBD oil benefits that thousands of people rely on daily.

3 – Pain Reduction

The NIH PubChem database also lists CBD as having analgesic (pain-relieving) activity. Given the sweeping dangers of opioids and prescription painkiller use, this is a potential game-changer for millions of individuals worldwide.

Almost 130 people die in the United States every day from opioid-related drug use. Because of this, more people are eagerly seeking alternatives to opioids for pain relief. Fortunately, there is a variety of research on CBD use for this exact purpose.

Updated 2022 guide to CBD oil…

A study published in the journal Pain in 2019 observed the analgesic effects of several pharmaceutical-grade cannabis products on pain relating to fibromyalgia. Test subjects that used Bediol – a cannabis product containing 13.4mg THC and 17.8mg CBD – reported a 30% decrease in pain compared to placebo.

A separate 2016 study published in the European Journal of Pain found that transdermal CBD reduced inflammation and pain-related behavior in a rat model of arthritis.

From these (and many other) peer-reviewed studies, it is becoming clear that pain relief is a key CBD oil benefit that could improve the lives of many millions of individuals.

4 – Inflammation Relief

“Anti-inflammatory” is yet another activity of CBD identified by the NIH’s PubChem Compound Summary. Similar to its effects on pain relief, there are various studies relating to the influence of cannabidiol on various forms of inflammation – including numerous types of arthritis.

A 2020 publication in the journal Antioxidants identifies CBD as a non-intoxicating compound and notes its “beneficial pharmacological effects, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.”

A separate study notes that the daily administration of CBD “inhibited disease progression” in collagen-induced arthritis. Arthritis, of course, is a disease characterized by chronic inflammation of the joints.

Regarding the practical use of CBD oil for inflammation relief, prospective customers can choose from a seemingly endless range of product types in most U.S. states. Again, however, it is important to remember that there is minimal regulation regarding CBD oil quality. We recommend reading through our comprehensive CBD product guide for a list of some of the market’s most reputable brands and products.

5 – Neuroprotective Potential

Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by the loss or deterioration of neurons in the central nervous system. Nerve cell loss – which characterizes conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer’s – can result in a significant decline in a person’s cognitive and motor function.

While environmental toxins and mutated genes are often implicated in the cause of neurodegenerative disorders, researchers don’t yet understand the full breadth of physiological mechanisms at play.

Researchers don’t fully understand the causes of neurodegenerative disorders, but CBD may be able to help.

However, we do know through the National Institute of Health that CBD “has shown neuroprotective activity” – though it is maintained that the “exact medical implications [of cannabidiol] are currently being investigated.”

An additional review of CBD-based research, published in Frontiers in Pharmacology in March 2020, looked at cannabidiol’s benefits for patients with neurodegenerative diseases. Researchers analyzed dozens of studies over the past three decades, concluding that CBD is a “potential pharmacological tool for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders.”

CBD Benefits Chart

The CBD health benefits chart below includes what the research suggests are cannabidiol’s main health benefits.

CBD’s anticonvulsant properties are well-established. In 2018, the FDA approved the CBD-based medication, Epidiolex to treat Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome and Dravet Syndrome; two rare forms of childhood epilepsy.

Research shows that CBD has an anxiolytic effect. For example, this randomized controlled trial demonstrated that CBD reduced anxiety in participants in a simulated public speaking test.

Research shows that CBD has both antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties.

Nausea and Vomiting

In a review of the anti-emetic properties of cannabinoids demonstrated in animal studies, the authors state that CBD “suppresses nausea and vomiting within a limited dose range” and that the “preclinical research indicates that cannabinoids, including CBD, may be effective clinically for treating both nausea and vomiting produced by chemotherapy or other therapeutic treatments.”

In a review of the antipsychotic properties of CBD in human studies, the authors state that “the first small-scale clinical studies with CBD treatment of patients with psychotic symptoms confirm the potential of CBD as an effective, safe and well-tolerated antipsychotic compound.

Aside from being non-intoxicating, CBD is generally well-tolerated in humans, has relatively mild adverse effects which manifest rarely, and has a low risk of addiction.

Practical CBD Oil Benefits: A Summary

We know that CBD poses anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, anxiety, and pain-relieving activity. It is also considered an effective option for various forms of epilepsy.

However, a lack of regulation in the current market continues to produce an alarming range of sub-standard CBD products. Many of these products are not regulated and may boast milligram CBD concentrations far from the actual amount contained in the bottle. For this reason, it is imperative that prospective customers only purchase products with laboratory-verified CBD content.

In the future, we hope to see increased regulation regarding product manufacturing that results in the availability of higher-quality CBD products. Until then, individuals must select from a relatively limited range of brands to experience practical, real-life CBD oil benefits.
