Entrepreneur with a passion for the benefits of CBD oil
Mitchell Butterfield is a young man with entrepreneurial blood in his veins.
He is intelligent, has rock-solid family support and you feel he would make a success of any business he set up.
So why choose one that instinctively attracts criticism, even anger, and which many politicians at local and national level would like to see strangled by regulations?
The reason Mitchell is pinning his entire future on this sector is that he has – in vast amounts – the one key asset any entrepreneur needs. He has such a passion for the benefits and potential of CBD oil that he is ready to calmly and intelligently take on any challenges that stand in the way of CBD Sure Health becoming a successful business and is becoming a leading light in the campaign for Cannabis Oil to get the sort of regulated freedom it deserves.
Mitchell is determined to work with the law-makers to stop illegal sales and make sure the rules are respected and the whole sector is understood rather than feared, which will enable CBD Sure Health and similar businesses to enjoy the freedom to prosper that draws so many new businesses to Teesside in the North East.
“CBD is a very natural product that hasn’t been manufactured by adding together different components, and for me that is very important,” said Mitchell.
“People have built up a strong trust of pharmaceutical companies because you take a pill and your headache is gone, but what they often don’t take into account is what things like paracetamol might be doing to your liver (the British Liver Trust says paracetamol overdose is one of the leading causes of liver failure), and the same is true of recreational users of cannabis, of which there are many in Teesside.
“Because it comes from black market suppliers, you simply can’t be sure what is in it, how it has been cultivated or what has been added and can have a detrimental effect on people’s mental health. Nine times out of ten, users smoke their cannabis – so you would want to be really sure you aren’t smoking garden fertiliser as well…..”
His ambition and drive comes from the fact that his uncle, who has been a keen supporter and mentor, told him about a friend who had been using an oil which he claimed helped him with pain arising from his skin cancer. Mitchell’s uncle was so impressed that he decided he wanted to invest in the future of CBD and help spread the word. He turned to Mitchell to run the business and CBD Sure Health started life in an end-terrace house in Portrack in Stockton, a few miles from Middlesbrough.
Mitchell tells me: “His story also helped me to realise that every user of CBD oil needs it in a slightly different way. Some take it because they believe it is helping to keep their skin clear or regulate back pain. Making sure it is widely available, understood and trusted means we can help all these people make the most of their lives – I can’t imagine a better motivation to get this right as soon as possible.
Mitchell sells a variety of products on his website to cater for all those needs, from 300mg, 500mg, 1500 mg and 2000mg bottles of the oil to body lotions, tea, soap and vape liquids, all with free delivery in the UK.
“CBD, or Cannabidiol, is a chemical found in cannabis plants, which have more than a hundred uses ranging from making paper to fabric,” he explained.
“Professional horticulturists grow hemp cannabis plants and extract the CBD from them, after which it is primarily added to a base oil (commonly olive oil) which humans can consume to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Hemp was originally used many years ago and used to be part of a normal human diet, and every one of us still has an endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is the bodies natural system that processes Cannabinoids and helps it returns to its baseline state after being disturbed, so really CBD oil is just helping reactivate what has always been there.
“Taking CBD is exactly the same as taking vitamins or mineral supplements which may compensate for deficiencies in your diet and the oils, e-liquids or any other CBD product won’t get you high because CBD is a non-psychoactive substance and is completely legal in the United Kingdom,” said Mitchell.
A Home Office factsheet on ‘Cannabis, CBD and other cannabinoids’ says: “Home Office policy provides that licences may be issued for the cultivation of cannabis plants with a low tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content for the production of hemp fibre for industrial purposes or the obtaining of seeds which are then pressed for their oil. For both of these uses, licences are granted to enable the use of non-controlled parts of the plant (i.e. seeds and fibre/ mature stalk only). This policy is only applicable where non-controlled parts of the plant are used.”
That’s strict, and is only part of the much longer document available at bit.ly/homeofficecbd, but it is right that it leaves no room for error. If businesses like Mitchell’s step out of line by just an inch or two, they are finished. But that’s what the legal businesses want – clarity – and it is one of the inspirations for the campaigning side of his business.
“There are problems the industry has to tackle and which I am determined to help solve,” he says.
“One is the whole idea that this is cannabis and therefore illegal and dangerous, because it could be a gateway to stronger drugs. But the vital element not all people understand is the THC the Home Office factsheet refers to. Tetrahydrocannabinol is the chemical in cannabis that’s responsible for causing the high that’s associated with cannabis use, and is still very much illegal.
“Therefore, though the CBD I get is entirely legal, there are strict restrictions over its THC content. Currently, oils and other products in the UK can only have a maximum THC content of 0.2%. Any CBD oil with a higher THC content is illegal.
“All my products fall under the 0.2% THC threshold, but there are many operations out there that ignore the rules, supply CBD with an illegal level of THC in it and create an appalling industry cashing in on health concerns and causing so much heartache for customers who are already struggling with their lives.
“That’s something I can’t just stand by and let happen.
“By bringing this whole sector out of the shadows and shining a light on the benefits of CBD oil, I hope to make it easier to flush out the businesses that are in danger of ruining it for the rest of us and ultimately denying people the chance to try legal CBD products right here in the North East.”
One thing these legal businesses will always have is lab reports certifying the THC content and other ingredients in the oil. Mitchell puts his in full view on the website at https://www.cbdsurehealth.co.uk/lab-reports/ and says that if a supplier can’t show lab reports then the customer should walk away.
“I would open my door to anyone who is unsure about the products and concerned about the whole sector. I’ll talk to anyone to set the record straight because it matters to me what people think about CBD and I want to earn their trust.”
Mitchell knows the rules and refuses to make any direct claims about the health benefits of CBD, but it may not be long before this is possible, with a growing amount of research here and abroad.
This latest Tees Valley entrepreneur is at the forefront of what could become a thriving sector, reassuringly wrapped in regulations rather than being smothered by them.
The fact that he wants to fight for his trade and provide his customers with a quality product makes this yet another business the region can be proud of.
